Texas Observer Redesign

image

The Texas Observer is a long-running independent publication known for investigative journalism and cultural commentary. As lead creative director, I led a complete visual redesign of the magazine and its digital presence, reimagining how the publication could engage readers across print, web, and social platforms.

The project focused on modernizing the brand while preserving the publication’s editorial voice, creating a cohesive visual system that connected the magazine, website, and digital storytelling experiences. The redesign expanded visual storytelling and helped the publication reach audiences through a more integrated print and digital experience.

Role & Responsibilities

Lead Creative Director

  • Leading the visual redesign of the magazine and digital platforms
  • Defining a new brand identity and editorial design system
  • Commissioning and directing photographers, illustrators, and artists
  • Collaborating with editors to shape visual storytelling across issues
  • Designing the publication’s digital presence and online reading experience

Outcomes

  • Significant increase in online engagement across the publication’s digital platforms
  • Growth in print readership following the redesign
  • A cohesive brand system that unified print, web, and social media experiences

The Opportunity

The publication had a strong editorial voice but an aging visual identity that limited its ability to reach new audiences and fully express the depth of its journalism.

The redesign presented an opportunity to reimagine the publication as a modern storytelling platform that could connect print, digital, and social media into a unified experience.

Key goals included:

  • Modernizing the visual identity while preserving the publication’s character
  • Expanding visual storytelling through photography and illustration
  • Creating a stronger connection between print and digital experiences
  • Increasing reader engagement across platforms

The Challenge

Editorial publications require balancing expressive visual storytelling with readability and journalistic credibility.

The redesign needed to:

  • Preserve the integrity of the publication’s editorial voice
  • Support long-form investigative journalism
  • Create a flexible visual system adaptable to many story types
  • Integrate photography, illustration, and typography into a cohesive identity

Key Experience Areas

Editorial Design System: A new editorial framework was created to support long-form journalism while allowing flexibility for different story types, features, and visual essays.

Visual Direction: Each issue incorporated commissioned photography and illustration to bring stories to life. I worked closely with photographers and illustrators to shape the visual tone of the publication.

Digital Experience: The redesign extended beyond print to the publication’s website and social channels, creating a cohesive experience across platforms and allowing stories to reach readers in new ways.

Brand Evolution: The project reimagined the publication’s identity as a contemporary editorial platform, balancing tradition with a more modern visual language.

Outcomes

The redesign significantly increased engagement across the publication’s digital channels while strengthening the magazine’s presence in print.

Expanded visual storytelling helped attract new audiences while maintaining loyalty among long-time readers. The cohesive brand system also made it easier for the editorial team to produce visually compelling stories across both print and digital platforms.

Reflection

This project reinforced the importance of visual storytelling in journalism. Editorial design is not only about layout and typography but also about creating an environment where reporting, photography, illustration, and narrative work together to deepen reader engagement.

Leading the redesign required balancing creative exploration with respect for the publication’s history and editorial voice.
